I listen to your goals and give you solutions.

I will work with you to identify your specific functional goals and map out a plan to reach those goals. I find great joy in giving you the tools to enable you to master your movement and achieve the lifestyle you strive for. I can help you meet your goals whether they are to compete in triathlon competition or to be able to stand up from a chair without pain. I can help you if you with a variety of difficulties that can arise from arthritis, joint pain, muscle strains and tears, post surgical care, pre surgical rehab, impingement syndromes, neck and back pain, pinched nerves, sports injuries, post stroke rehab and much more.

I find the root of your problem.

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I am an expert at empowering others at mastering movement and taking control of their personal functional goals. I am an observant and expert movement analyzer.  I can identify what  dysfunctions and imbalances are causing you to move less efficiently. I can identify what can be done to improve those imbalances: loosen what is stiff, strengthen what is weak, and stabilize through muscle training what is unstable. I can help you to identify the root cause of what is giving you pain or reduced function.

I help you solve your pain problem so that you can take control of your active life.

My name is Dawn Thomas and I am a Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy. I am an expert clinician and educator in anatomy, musculoskeletal diagnosis, injury recovery, exercise and self-management. For years, I have had many requests for personalized services online or in the home. I have reinvigorated my understanding of the importance of patient education, exercise and movement instruction through providing remote services amid the pandemic crisis of 2020. I decided it was time to say "YES" to those requests and launch Dawn Thomas Physical Therapy.

Dawn Thomas DScPT, OMPT

I am a physical therapist who has been engaged in multifaceted patient care since 1995. I became an orthopedic expert in 2000 with my Orthopedic Manual Therapy Certification and a Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy in 2016, both from Oakland University. I have a long professional history of working with a wide range of patients who have medical and physical limitations both orthopedic and neurological. I have spent years honing my craft of movement mastery through post graduate education, practice, a commitment to lifelong learning, teaching, and providing therapy in acute care, rehab and outpatient environments. I very much enjoy guiding clients with all stages of recovering from injury or surgery as well as enhancing mobility at all levels from basic to highly advanced. I take pride in my ability to problem-solve complex cases and apply my knowledge and skill to orthopedic and neurological conditions. I have been a collegiate athlete (Diving, Sailing, Gymnastics), and am an aging athlete (Running, Open Water Swimming, Dog Walking, Triathlon), and have decades of teaching and lifelong learning behind me and in front of me. This has earned me a unique perspective and advantage in instructing clients to meet their goals. When I am not working with patients, you can find me enjoying camping, photography, triathlon training, open water swimming, and being a sports mom.

I strive to bring hope and enthusiasm to your journey.

Being a physical therapist has been a source of great pride and joy in my life since I graduated from Marquette University in 1992. In my pursuit of becoming a more informed and well-rounded PT, I gained my certification in the Neurodevelopmental Technique (NDT) Management of Adults with Stroke and Brain Injury and completed my doctoral degree in Physical Therapy at Oakland University where I am currently an instructor in the neuro tract.

My passion is working with individuals who are living with a chronic neurological diagnosis such as stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, or spinal cord injury.

I believe that progress can always be made, regardless of how long ago you were diagnosed or your current level of function.

I truly believe and teach my students that there is always something to gain, there is always another way of looking at things.

My approach is functionally-based and creative in its design, focusing on quality of life and improving your participation in that life.

As a previous gymnast and mom to 3 athletic daughters, I see the importance of movement and lifelong learning at all stages.

I love movement analysis and problem solving to achieve more joyful movement.

My passion for sport led me to my career as a doctor of physical therapy. I earned my DPT degree at Oakland University in 2015 and have been learning and honing my craft since. I had the good fortune to work directly with a high caliber orthopedic surgical group of physicians and therapists which has shaped my deep knowledge and mastery of pre and post surgical rehabilitation for a wide range of orthopedic injuries. I also embraced the opportunity to work with children in the school setting to optimize their function at school.

I am a lifelong athlete, with soccer always being my main sport. I have had the pleasure of both helping coach a travel soccer team as well as doing individualized training sessions with young athletes. I grew up playing a wide variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, football (kicker), and track. I continued to play every intramural sport offered during my undergrad and graduate time spent at OU. This background adds to my academic knowledge and gives me experiences to draw from to help my clients return to the activities that bring them joy. My competitive nature guides me in pushing my clients to achieve their goals and gives me a strong desire to see them succeed.

Outside of work I like to soak up as much time with family as possible and get outdoors!  Taking the dogs for walks, playing with my son, gardening, playing soccer, going for hikes (exploring our national parks whenever possible), camping, disc golfing, and pickleball just to name a few.

She is committed to empowering individuals.

Since earning her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Oakland University in 2022, Allison has developed a deep passion for advocating and teaming up with patients who often feel dismissed or pushed around within the healthcare system. She is committed to empowering individuals by helping them recognize and celebrate even the smallest milestones, fostering intrinsic motivation, and reinforcing their sense of autonomy and capability.

She has adopted a style of integrating both traditional physical therapy methods—such as manual therapy, tailored exercise prescription, or balance and ergonomic training—with alternative techniques such as cupping, taping, functional dry needling, blood flow restriction, and/or diet recommendations. By treating the whole person—mind, body, and environment—Allison focuses on optimizing patient outcomes and improving overall quality of life.

Allison is certified as an Exercise Performance Specialist (XPS) through EXOS. She also has certifications in functional dry needling, myofascial soft tissue mobilization, and therapeutic taping. She has post-doctoral training in golf and running injury prevention/treatment, female athlete rehabilitation, low back and pelvic pain, and a variety of post-operative and non-operative orthopedic conditions.

In addition to her clinical expertise, Allison is a co-author of a peer-reviewed article on asynchronous learning among physical therapists, specifically regarding fall risk and prevention in community-dwelling older adults.
