Therapeutic Taping

Therapeutic taping is a common and effective tool used by physical therapists to support healing, reduce pain, and improve function. There are different types of taping methods, each with a specific purpose depending on your condition, activity level, and treatment goals.

Whether you're recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic pain, or trying to improve movement patterns, taping can be a helpful addition to your therapy plan.

1. Kinesiology Tape (e.g. KinesioTape, RockTape)

Kinesiology tape is a flexible, breathable tape that mimics the elasticity of human skin. It can be worn for up to four to five days and is designed to move with your body.

Benefits:

  • Reduces pain by decreasing pressure on sensitive tissues

  • Improves circulation and lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling

  • Supports muscles and joints without restricting movement

  • Promotes better posture and body awareness (proprioception)

  • Useful for sports injuries, back/neck pain, joint swelling, or tendinopathies.

2. McConnell Taping

McConnell taping uses a rigid, non-elastic tape and is typically applied for short durations. It’s often used to correct joint alignment, especially around the knee.

Benefits:

  • Improves joint alignment and tracking

  • Reduces strain on irritated tissues

  • Provides stability during functional tasks

  • Common in patellofemoral pain, kneecap tracking issues, shoulder instability, and postural syndromes

3. Athletic/Supportive Taping (Rigid Tape)

This type of tape provides firm support and is typically used in sports or injury recovery to stabilize joints or limit excessive movement.

Benefits:

  • Prevents re-injury during high-risk activities

  • Immobilizes or supports specific joints or ligaments

  • Often used for acute injuries and return-to-sport scenarios

4. Leukotape & Cover-Roll Systems

Often used in conjunction with McConnell-style taping, Leukotape is a rigid, sticky tape placed over a softer base layer (Cover-Roll).

Benefits:

  • Offers firm, durable support

  • Used for joint repositioning and neuromuscular re-education

  • Helps train proper movement patterns
